Nineteen Eighty-Four poster
This Nineteen Eighty-Four is dedicated to the famous novel by George Orwell. The caption on the poster was on the front side of The Ministry of Truth which was visible from Winston’s office.
The Ministry of Truth — Minitrue, in Newspeak — was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up, terrace after terrace, three hundred meters into the air. From where Winston stood it was just possible to read, picked out on its white face in elegant lettering, the three slogans of the Party:
War is peace
Freedom is slavery
Ignorance is strength
The posted is designed in two languages: English and Russian. Both version are in tiff format, for printing on A1 page.
The Russian version is special. In English there’re no dashes, but in Russian there’re three. It’s impossible to get rid of them because they’re a part of the language. And it’s impossible to keep them because they make huge gaps at the end of lines.
The solution is brilliant. We make dashed go through the poster. They start at one line, go until the edge and continue at the next line.
By novel, the background was white. But we don’t like this version much.
The poster can be used for every non-commercial purpose. Feel free to keep it your room, office, on The Ministry of Truth facade, to distribute leaflets and to print in mass media specifying the designer’s name.
